Banská Štiavnica is conveniently located in the very center of Slovakia – it is not far away from anywhere, and it is great place to take trips from to other regions as well.
Banská Štiavnica has good direct bus connections from Bratislava , Nitra , Levice, Žiar nad Hronom, Zvolen and Banská Bystrica. Last three locations mentioned (ZH, ZV, BB) are the best hubs for those visitors that travel from places without direct connection to Banská Štiavnica. Banská Štiavnica can be accessed via nice Kozelník valley, using old slow train which locals call „Štiavnická Ana“, resembling the old pre-war train. Airport Sliač –approx. 30 km from Banská Štiavnica, connected 2 times daily with Prague . There is no direct connection from the airport to Banská Štiavnica. Parking in Banská Štiavnica is possible either in dedicated hotel parking places – secure and convenient parking offer Pension Kachelman, Hotel Grand-Matej, Pension „Na Kopci“ and Pension „Príjemný oddych“) or using guarded parking place in the center of the town, close to „Mining high school“ (5 minutes by foot from the center of the town, upon agreement possibility of guarded parking overnight). Another public parking spot is close to Nový Zámok ( New Castle – approx. 10 minutes from the center of the town).
Parking on the streets of Banská Štiavnica is possible with parking card or a ticket from a parking machine ( Holly Trinity Square ), however, we suggest you to be respectful to the protection of natural and historical values of the town and use guarded public parking places.
On the first sight it looks like Banská Štiavnica is located high in the mountains, not accessible by bike. However, the opposite is true – it is a popular destination for bikers, and bike is a popular mean of transportation in the region.

The serpentines on route from Žarnovica to Banská Štiavnica via Hodruša Hámre or Vyhne are a challenge even for well trained bikers.
In Banská Štiavnica region a bike is a great way to travel, especially for visiting lakes in the region – Štiavnické Bane, Richňava, Počúvadlo or Banský Studenec. Comfortable bike ride can be taken to St. Anton, visiting popular Chateau and „Stary Hostinec“ pub. A biker`s dream is scenic route around the Sitno Mountain: Banská Štiavnica – Sv. Anton – Prenčov – Beluj – Klastava - Baďan – Lake Počúvadlo – Štiavnické Bane – Banská Štiavnica (50 km).
Štiavnica lakes are true heaven for mountain biking. You can enjoy either comfortable routes for families, riding through meadows and forests, but also highly technical single tracks for trained bikers. A local specialty is biking through a unique network of channels, creating together with about 22 lakes unique water management system. To those with higher stamina we recommend workout on a route of one of the oldest MTB marathons in Slovakia , known as Banská Štiavnica mountain bike challenge (120 km, always during the first Saturday in August). Its route is marked by blue cycling marking; it is 30 km long, with elevation of 750 m.
